Story

Inspiration for the Stacks on Stacks on Stacks capsule stems from the plethora of ways in which the unit "stack" can be used. For example, stacks of hay, stacks of waffles, stacks of money, stacks of tech software, stacks of evidence. It is a wonderfully dynamic word, and unlike other units of measurement which are fixed, it pushes us to consider how its meaning may change and be utilized differently in the next century and beyond. 

Through the early 1890s, painter Claude Monet created the series "Stacks of Wheat" outside his farmhouse in Giverny. The exhibition of 15 canvases stood around 20 feet tall, and provided financial success that launched his career, as well as cemented French art in history. For him, " the stack" was most visually connected to hay stacks, and denoted both sustenance and survival. 

Formalized as early as 1903 in the book "Slang and Its Analogues Past and Present", where "stacks of the ready" meant "plenty of money", and then brought further into popular culture in the 2000s by Z-Ro and Trae the Truth's rap album "Paper Stacks, Vol. 3", as well as Soulja Boy via his song "Stacks on Stacks on Stacks", the term has entered everyday vernacular. In fact, in 2011, the well-known news channel MSNBC released an article about a woman hiring a hitman, promising to pay "a stack" for the success of the service.
